Music for Jazz-Trio & String-Quartet

Tal Balshai combines his compositional influences from both classical and jazz idioms in this project. Lyrical melodies reinforced by lush string textures. This cultural journey starts in the Asia Minor and moves through Europe to South America. Tal Balshai’s trio is joined by some of the top string players from the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, who show a new and unknown facet of their musical capabilities on this recording.

From Babelsberg To Beverly Hills

This project is dedicated to German composers, especially Berliner composers from the 1930’s. Quite a few of them had to leave Nazi Germany and found refuge and a new career in the booming American film industry in Hollywood. Others stayed in Germany and worked on under very strict censorship in German theatres, or for the German propaganda industry. The music for this evening was selected by Angela Denoke and Tal Balshai and especially arranged by Tal Balshai.

Tal Balshai presents his compositions and arrangements in one of the most common jazz formations: the Quintet. Featuring trumpet and tenor-saxophone up front, the band plays multi-layered melodies and a wide variety of compositional styles, again underlining Tal’s fantasy and humour as a composer and arranger.

Tal Balshai playing and improvising original music: a perfect evening with the piano. One can clearly feel Tal's love for the piano and his deep interest in the sounds one can produce from the instrument. Tal’s music is at it's freest both in form and harmony in this idiom. A solo piano Cd - “Winterlandschaft” (Winterscape) was released in co-production with RBB (Radio-Berlin-Brandenburg) in 2008 on the label “Honigtee music”.
